Your vehicle is an important part of everyday life. Personal auto insurance can help protect you financially if you're involved in an accident, your vehicle is damaged, or you're responsible for injuries or property damage to others.
At VeritasPoint Insurance Services, we help you understand your coverage options and choose protection based on your vehicle, driving habits, household, and budget.

What Does Personal Auto Insurance Cover?
A personal auto policy can include several types of coverage designed to protect you, your passengers, your vehicle, and others.
Liability Coverage
Liability coverage helps pay for injuries or property damage you cause to another person when you are responsible for an accident.
It generally includes:
Bodily Injury Liability
Helps pay for injuries or death you cause to another person in an accident for which you are responsible.
Property Damage Liability
Helps pay for damage you cause to another person's vehicle or property.
California requires drivers to maintain financial responsibility. Most drivers satisfy this requirement by carrying auto liability insurance.
California Minimum Liability Limits
For standard auto policies issued or renewed in California beginning January 1, 2025, the minimum liability limits are generally:
$30,000 — bodily injury/death to one person
$60,000 — bodily injury/death to two or more people
$15,000 — property damage
These are legal minimums, not necessarily the amount of coverage that is appropriate for every driver.
Collision Coverage
Collision coverage helps pay for damage to your vehicle caused by a collision with:
Another vehicle
An object
A structure
Other covered collision situations
Collision coverage generally has a deductible, which is the amount you pay before the insurance company pays the covered loss.
Comprehensive Coverage
Comprehensive coverage helps protect your vehicle from certain losses that are not caused by a collision.
Examples may include:
Theft
Vandalism
Fire
Windstorm
Flood
Falling objects
Other covered events
Comprehensive coverage generally has a deductible. It does not normally cover mechanical breakdown, normal wear and tear, or routine maintenance.
Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Not every driver on the road has enough insurance.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage can help protect you when you're involved in an accident caused by a driver who:
Has no liability insurance
Does not have enough liability insurance to cover your injuries
California insurers generally must offer this coverage when you purchase liability insurance, although you can choose to reject it by signing the appropriate waiver.
Medical Payments Coverage
Medical Payments coverage may help pay certain medical expenses for you or your passengers after an auto accident, regardless of who was at fault, subject to the policy terms and limits.
This coverage can help with eligible immediate medical expenses resulting from an accident.
Rental Reimbursement
If your vehicle is damaged in a covered accident and is being repaired, rental reimbursement coverage may help pay for a rental vehicle, subject to the policy's limits and conditions.
This coverage is optional.
Towing & Roadside Assistance
Roadside assistance may help with certain services such as:
Towing
Battery assistance
Flat-tire assistance
Lockout service
Other covered roadside services
Availability and limits vary by insurance company and policy.
What About a Car Loan or Lease?
If you finance or lease your vehicle, your lender or leasing company may require comprehensive and collision coverage.
If your vehicle is totaled, your insurance generally pays based on the vehicle's covered value, subject to the policy terms and deductible.
If you owe more on the loan or lease than the vehicle is worth, GAP coverage may help cover the difference when applicable. GAP coverage is separate from your regular auto policy and may be available through certain insurers, lenders, or other providers.
Who Needs Personal Auto Insurance?
Personal auto insurance may be appropriate for people who use their vehicles primarily for personal purposes, such as:
Everyday driving
Commuting
Shopping and errands
Family activities
Personal travel
Visiting friends and family
If a vehicle is used primarily for business purposes, commercial auto insurance may be more appropriate.
We'll help you determine which type of coverage may fit your situation.
What Can Affect Your Auto Insurance Premium?
Insurance companies may consider many factors when determining eligibility and premium, including:
Driving history
Accidents and claims
Vehicle make and model
Vehicle usage
Annual mileage
Location
Drivers in the household
Insurance history
Coverage limits
Deductibles
Discounts
Other rating factors allowed by applicable law
The information required during an application can include the vehicles and drivers in your household, driving history, vehicle use, mileage, and whether the vehicle is financed or leased.
Coverage That May Be Available
Depending on the insurance company and policy, additional options may include:
Liability
Protection when you are responsible for injuries or property damage to others.
Collision
Protection for covered collision damage to your vehicle.
Comprehensive
Protection for certain non-collision losses.
Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist
Protection when an at-fault driver has no insurance or insufficient coverage.
Medical Payments
Coverage for certain medical expenses after an accident.
Rental Reimbursement
Help with transportation while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered loss.
Roadside Assistance
Help with eligible roadside emergencies.
Choosing the Right Coverage
California's minimum liability requirements provide the basic legal level of financial responsibility, but minimum coverage may not provide enough protection for everyone.
When reviewing your policy, we can discuss:
Liability limits
Deductibles
Vehicle value
Collision and comprehensive coverage
Uninsured/underinsured motorist protection
Medical payments
Rental reimbursement
Roadside assistance
Household drivers
Vehicle usage
Financing or leasing requirements
Our goal is to help you understand what you're buying and why you may need it.
